The Quality of Courage

Courage is the key. It seems to unlock the door to all the other inner qualities we need to get things  done, and done well, in life. Churchill wrote: "Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees all others".  And if you’re looking for your courage, remember that it is attached to your other good qualities.

If you know that you have patience, know, too,  that patience is a close friend of courage; you may need to use your patience, and wait until the moment comes to use your courage. Sometimes it takes courage to stay still, hold back, wait your turn, and not rush in and act rashly.

Consider the other qualities you have – that may not at first sight seem to be related to courage – generosity, optimism, kindness and spend some time working out how they are related to courage. Often the quality you acknowledge you have is closely allied to the quality you believe you need – and on quiet reflection, they turn out to be the best of friends. You already have the courage you need.

Here is an exercise called Courage & Friends, which you complete if you want to go deeper into this subject. Consider the potential, the opportunities and outcomes that present themselves when you consciously pair up the quality of Courage with 25 (for starters) other inner strengths. [A small beginning has been made on the first few qualities, but these loads more interesting insights if you invest the time in considering these interesing pairings].
